What is Reiki? A Beginner's Guide to Energy Healing

If you've heard the word "Reiki" but aren't quite sure what it means — or whether it's something for you — you're in the right place. Reiki is one of those things that's easier to experience than explain, but we'll do our best to give you a clear, grounded introduction.

So, What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word itself comes from two Japanese words — rei, meaning universal, and ki, meaning vital life force energy. Together they describe the foundational idea behind the practice: that there is a universal life force energy that flows through all living things, and that when that energy is blocked or out of balance, it can affect our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

A Reiki practitioner channels this healing energy through their hands — either by lightly placing them on or just above the body — with the intention of clearing blockages, restoring balance, and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.

What Does a Reiki Session Feel Like?

Everyone's experience is a little different, but most people describe a Reiki session as deeply relaxing — similar to the feeling of drifting off to sleep while still being aware of your surroundings. Some people feel warmth, tingling, or a gentle sense of release. Others simply feel a profound sense of calm and stillness.

There's no right or wrong way to experience Reiki. You don't need to believe in it for it to work — you simply need to be open and willing to receive.

What Can Reiki Support?

Reiki is a complementary wellness practice, meaning it works alongside — not instead of — medical or mental health care. That said, many people find it helpful for:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Supporting emotional processing and release
  • Improving sleep and relaxation
  • Finding clarity during periods of transition or uncertainty
  • General feelings of balance, groundedness, and calm

In-Person or Distance — What's the Difference?

One of the most common questions we hear is whether Reiki can really work at a distance. The short answer is yes — and many clients find distance sessions just as powerful as in-person ones. Because Reiki works with energy rather than physical touch, it isn't limited by location. Distance sessions are conducted at a scheduled time while you relax at home.
