If you've never been to Grand Haven, Michigan — put it on your list. And if you have, you already know why people keep coming back.

Nestled where the Grand River meets Lake Michigan, Grand Haven is one of West Michigan's most beloved beach towns. It has the kind of small-town charm that's genuinely hard to find — a walkable downtown, stunning waterfront, a tight-knit community of local businesses, and a pace of life that makes you exhale the moment you arrive.

Whether you're planning a girls trip, a bachelorette weekend, a day trip from Grand Rapids, or just looking for something new to do in West Michigan, here's our local's guide to making the most of Grand Haven.

The Waterfront — Start Here

No trip to Grand Haven is complete without walking the boardwalk. The Grand Haven Boardwalk runs along the Grand River all the way out to the iconic red lighthouse and pier — one of the most photographed spots in all of Michigan. Walk it at sunset and you'll understand why people fall in love with this town.

In the summer months, Grand Haven State Park draws visitors from across the Midwest for its soft sand beach and stunning Lake Michigan views. Pack a cooler, find a spot, and stay as long as you can.

Don't miss the Grand Haven Musical Fountain either — the world's largest musical fountain puts on a free show at dusk during the warmer months and it's a genuinely memorable experience.

Eat, Drink & Explore Downtown

Grand Haven's downtown strip along Washington Avenue is packed with independently owned shops, cafés, and restaurants worth exploring. A few local favorites worth seeking out:

The Toasted Pickle is a one-of-a-kind sandwich shop beloved by locals and visitors alike. Pro tip — grab a table at Odd Side Ales just down the block, order a craft beer, and have The Toasted Pickle deliver your food directly to your table. It's the perfect Grand Haven afternoon.

For something a little different, head to the East End neighborhood — Grand Haven's quieter, more local-feeling district away from the main tourist strip. The Unicorn Tavern is a Belgian-inspired gastropub with scratch-made comfort food, a carefully curated beer list, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely welcoming. Also in the East End: Burzurk Brewing and Off The Chain Brewstillery, two craft breweries that locals love and visitors feel lucky to stumble upon.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Come on a Saturday. Our studio is open 11am–3pm, the farmers market runs seasonally, and the downtown energy is at its best.
  • Stay longer than a day. Grand Haven has enough to fill a full weekend — and vacation rentals in the area can fit a whole group comfortably.
  • Get off the main strip. The East End neighborhood is where the locals eat, drink, and gather — and it's well worth the short walk.

Grand Haven is the kind of place that gets under your skin in the best possible way. We're a little biased, of course — but we think it's one of the best small towns in Michigan, and we're glad to call it home.
